Random text chat with strangers

Typing only, one-on-one, with someone chosen at random. Your camera and microphone are never asked for, and the other person sees a random name and the words you type, nothing more.

Why choose text over video

  • You can think before you answer, and reread before you send.
  • It works anywhere: on a train, in a shared room, or on a slow connection.
  • Nobody sees your face, your room or hears your voice.
  • You are practising a language and want time to build a sentence.
  • You want to talk something through with a person who will never know who you are.

How to start a text chat

  1. Choose Text Chat. Use the button above, or pick the mode on the chat page.
  2. Add a few interests, or none. The matcher puts people who share one first, and falls back to anyone who is looking after a few seconds.
  3. Press Start. The first time, you are asked your gender and country, and by starting you confirm you are 18 or older. Then you are matched with the next person who is looking.

No email, no phone number and no download stand between you and a conversation.

How anonymous is it?

You chat under a random name such as QuietPanda482, with no account, email or phone number. The other person sees that name and what you choose to type. Because messages travel through our server, they never learn your IP address, which is the main privacy difference from a video chat.

Anonymous to each other is not the same as invisible, though. Our server sees your IP address in order to deliver messages, and uses it to stop spam and enforce bans; we never publish or sell it. Theprivacy policy lists everything the service processes.

Built-in protection

  • Slurs, threats and any sexual content involving children are refused before the other person sees them.
  • Offensive words from others are covered until you tap them, and links and phone numbers from strangers are hidden, since that is how most scams start.
  • Every chat has Block and Report. Reporting sends the last 30 messages to a moderator, and the other person is never told.

Chats are not watched live, and nobody is verified, so the usual care applies. Thesafety page lists the common warning signs.

What you can do in a chat

Type, send emoji and GIFs, and press Skip to meet someone new whenever a conversation has run its course. If it is going well, you can send a friend request and keep talking after the chat ends: seehow to turn a random chat into a friendship. Need an opener? Questions

Is text chat free?

Yes. Text chat is free, with no daily limit on how many people you meet. Paid plans only add extras such as gender and country filters and photo sharing.

Can the other person see my IP address in a text chat?

No. In a text chat, messages are delivered through our server, so the other person never learns your IP address. Our server does see it, as every website does, and uses it to stop spam and enforce bans.

Are text chats saved?

Messages pass through our server and are not written to disk. The one exception: if someone reports a conversation, its last 30 messages are saved for a moderator and deleted after 30 days. The other person can always take a screenshot, so do not type anything you would not want kept.

Is this an encrypted messenger?

No. Messages pass through our server to be delivered, which is what keeps your IP address from the other person. For private, encrypted messaging with people you already know, use a dedicated encrypted messenger.

Can I switch to video later?

Yes. The mode is a switch on the chat page, not a commitment. Choose Video + Text for your next chat whenever you are somewhere you are happy to be seen and heard.
