How random video chat works

Choose Video + Text. Use the button above, or pick the mode on the chat page. Your browser asks to use your camera and microphone.
Add a few interests, or none. Things like music, gaming or cricket put people who share one first. Leave them out for a fully random match.
Press Start. The first time, you are asked your gender and country, and by starting you confirm you are 18 or older. Then you are matched with the next person who is looking, and the call begins.

A message box sits alongside the call, so you can type a name, a song title or a joke that works better written down. When the conversation has run its course, press Skip and you are looking for someone new.

What the other person sees and hears

A random name such as QuietPanda482, your camera, your microphone and whatever you type. No email, phone number or profile is ever shown, because you never give us one. You can mute your microphone or turn your camera off during the call, and turn them back on whenever you like.

A video chat connects the two browsers directly, so each side can learn the other's IP address. If that matters to you, text chat never shows it.

Your video never reaches our server

Picture and sound travel straight between the two browsers. They never pass through our server, and we do not record calls. As on any video call, the other person could record their own screen, so do not show anything you would not want kept.

Each new video starts blurred for a moment while your own browser checks it for nudity, and it blurs again if nudity shows up. That check runs on your device and nothing is uploaded for it. You can also choose to have every video stay blurred until you tap it. Spoken words are not checked: mute the other person, press Skip or report them. Meet people who share your interests

Pure chance is fun, but a shared starting point makes the first minute easier. Add interests and the matcher first looks for someone who listed one of the same, and the chat opens by showing what you have in common. If nobody like that turns up within a few seconds, you meet the next available person instead of waiting. Free users can add up to 15 interests.

Free, with optional extras

Video chat, text chat, interest matching, Skip, Block and Report are all free. Paid plans exist for people who want more, such as gender and country filters, photo sharing, a longer chat history and a place nearer the front of the queue. You never need one to talk.

Tips for a better video chat

Check what is behind you. A letter, a uniform or a window view can say more than you meant to.
Sit facing a light rather than with one behind you, so the other person can see your face.
Open with a question, or with the interest you share, not just "hi".
Give it a minute before you skip, and skip without guilt when it is not working.
Never send money, gift cards or codes, and be careful with links from strangers.
If someone is rude, do not argue. Block or report them from the chat menu and move on.

Is random video chat free?

Yes. Video chat is free, with no daily limit on how many people you meet. Paid plans only add extras such as gender and country filters and photo sharing.

Do I need to download an app to video chat?

No. It runs in the browser on your phone, tablet or computer. Open the chat page, choose Video + Text and press Start. You need a camera and a microphone that you allow the site to use.

Can I video chat without showing my face?

You can turn your camera off or mute your microphone at any point during a call. If you would rather not use a camera at all, choose Text Chat instead: it never asks for one.

Can I choose who I video chat with?

Partly. Interests put people who share them first. Paid plans add a gender filter and a country filter, both based on what people told us when they started. There is no age filter, because everyone here must be 18 or older.

Why does my camera not turn on?

Usually the browser is blocking it. Check the camera and microphone permissions for this site in your browser settings, close any other app that is using the camera, and reload the page.
